Things I think about and do in my free time!

Books

I love reading books. But science and research consumes most of my time and hence my list of to-read-books keeps increasing every year.

Some books I have read in the past few years (Read Books). I would love to discuss about them with anyone who would be interested.

Music

I learnt to play the violin (Carnatic version - Indian classical) for few years while growing up but lost touch. I re-discovered the world of music again in my late 20s and being in Boston one cannot escape the influences of western classical music either. In the last few years I have been indulging in researching the theory of western classical music and Indian classical music. Inspite of having fundamental differences, these two music forms have amazing similarities. One of the striking observations one would make is that the western classical music is based on 'notes' and the Indian classical music is based on the 'interval' between the notes. The other major difference is in the 'notion of time' between these two art forms. In the Indian sense, 'time' is circular and there are various permutations and combinations to a circular time while in the western notion 'time' is linear. Yet, if one takes a look at the 'cycle of 5ths' and the 'melakartha raga classification scheme, one would realise there might be something common in both these art forms. Hopefully, one day I would get to write-up some of my thoughts about these two amazing art forms.

Science education

I strongly believe in public engagement, explanation and dissemination of science, I started this with blogging, the philosophy and contents of it can be found here, blog.

I am also a follower Uri Alon's school of thought to 'humanise science and its practise'. His website and articles can be found here: Material for nurturing scientists. Some more materials can be found here in the molecular cell forum.
