I will present summaries of a variety of projects from the past few years in which, having stopped writing code for a while, my theory group has approached biological problems with the back of an envelope, and has found, somewhat surprisingly, the ability to gain significant insights. This experience complements the 'big data' approach and mindset which is about to consume the life sciences. I will be happy to discuss cancer metastasis, gene regulatory networks, DNA replication and embryonic tissue topology as examples, with emphasis based on audience interest and interactive discussion.
